Team Captures First Ever Footage Of Newborn Great White Shark

There has never been a newborn Great White Shark seen on film… until now.

The University of California says wildlife filmmakerCarlos Gauna and UC Riverside biology doctoral student Phillip Sternes were in waters near Santa Barbara when they captured drone footage of the 5-foot-long shark pup. It was entirely white, while adults are gray.

Sternes later shared:

“I believe it was a newborn white shark shedding its embryonic layer.” You can see the layer slough off as the shark is swimming. Gauna is still stunned at their luck. He adds “Where white sharks give birth is one of the holy grails of shark science. No one has ever been able to pinpoint where they are born, nor has anyone seen a newborn baby shark alive. There have been dead white sharks found inside deceased pregnant mothers. But nothing like this.”
