Chimps Make Ladder Out of Branches to Escape Zoo

A group of chimpanzees successfully escaped from a zoo enclosure by constructing a ladder from tree branches.
The daring breakout occurred over the weekend at Ireland’s Belfast Zoo after the chimps realized the branches, which zookeepers say had been weakened by recent storms, could be easily broken off a tree in their enclosure. Video taken by a patron shows the primates climbing the ladder, walking along the top of the enclosure’s walls, and one scurrying along a path outside.
Fortunately, recapturing the escapees wasn’t an issue, zookeeper Alyn Cairns says. He tells the BBC, “they’re intelligent primates and know they’re not supposed to be out of their enclosure, so [they] got back in themselves.”
