31 Years, 31 Days, 31 Bands: Guns N’ Roses

performs onstage during day 2 of the 2016 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival Weekend 2 at the Empire Polo Club on April 23, 2016 in Indio, California.

I remember that the boy I had a crush on, Aaron, loved Guns N’ Roses. Our moms were friends, so I would go to his house and hang out sometimes. We’d play Duck Hunt on Nintendo, eat french fries with mayonnaise, and listen to GNR. At the time, I had a huge thing for New Kids on The Block… mind you, I was 7 or 8 years old, but I have always had a mature taste in music. I grew out of boy bands before I ever hit high school. Because I had such a massive crush on Aaron, I dove right into Appetite For Destruction¬†like it was my job. Everything GNR did, I embraced whole heartedly: music videos, interviews on MTV, cranking it up on the radio, etc. Eventually, my crush on Aaron died, but I continued listening to GNR for years to come. My favorite song is “November Rain;” my birthday is in November so I felt a connection to it. Plus, the video kicked some major ass! Slash playing in front of the church is so hot! #RockStarCrush I think that was one of the first times you actually saw his face without hair or sunglasses all over it.

I added ‘Paradise City” to my list, because it’s my 7 year old daughter’s favorite GNR song. She “discovered” them about the same age I did, and I love that I’m passing down good rock to my kids. All hail GNR.
